Nana Patil



Nana Patil

Nana Patil was biggest Freedom fighter popularly known as Krantisinha ( lit. 'revolutionary lion') was an Indian independence activist and Member of Parliament for the Communist Party of India representing Satara. Earlier, he had been a founder of the revolutionary 'Prati-sarkar' formed in Satara district of west Maharashtra[Yedemachhindragad]. He died on 6 December 1976.
British Raj period
Nana Patil was born on 3 August 1900 at Bahe gaon. His full name was Nana Ramchanra Pisal and he was underground from 1929 to 1932 before Quit India movement. Patil was imprisoned eight to nine times during the struggle with the [British Raj] from 1932 to 1942. For 44 months he was underground second time during the Quit India movement in 1942.He was active mainly in Tasgaon, Khanapur, Walva and south Karad Talukas in Satara Districts. He stayed a few months in the village of Dhankawadi, Purandhar and received help from the then patil (village headman) Mr. Shamrao Takawale. Instead of Gandhian resistance, Patil's method of direct attack on the colonial government was widely accepted in this district. A parallel administration(Prati Sarkar) known as the Prati Sarkar existed in some form for 3½ years (August 1943 to May 1946) in 150 villages.
Connections with Satyashodhak Samaj
He started his social work from 1919 with Satyashodhak Samaj which was founded by Mahatma Jyotiba Fule for development of Bahujan Samaj and awake a awareness of blind faith and old bad traditions. Total 10 years Nana worked for Satyashodhak Samaj .During that period he had started 'Gandhi-Vivah' (low budget marriage) & girls education in their area. He thought we don't have need of (Pandit)postman for sending a massage to God or Prey .we can talk directly, God understand everyone's language & voice if you have a trust in him. He was against of caste system & said we all are children of God. Then how can we make difference in brothers? There are no need to differences. Whole life he fought for poor & farmers's rights. He taught them to avoid extra expenses for marriage & festival and don't take loan & must literate your child for social development .
In Parliament
Patil was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1957 from north Satara constituency on the ticket of Communist Party of India. He was the first to give a speech in Marathi on the floor of Parliament.
Political career
Patil started his public life in the Indian National Congress but later joined the Shetkari Kaamgaar Paksha with Shankarrao More,Keshavrao Jedhe,Bhausaheb Raut,Madhavrao Bagal In 1948, he got a ticket from Communist Party of India in 1957 to contest the Lok Sabha elections in Satara constetuency and in 1967 from Beed constetuency.
Patil also fought along with Aacharya Atre for the creation of state of Maharashtra.
